Denim shorts are long and oversized again. Here is how we landed on the right length for our 18oz double front carpenter short, and how to wear it without looking like you are chasing a trend.

How long should my denim shorts be? That is a great question, and I have asked myself the same thing many different times over my life. I was a young and wild kid in the 90s, a vintage buyer in the early 2000s, and a brand and store owner from 09 to present day. I can honestly say my shorts have been way too big and way too small throughout the years.
Looking at men's fashion how it sits today, shorts are big, oversized and long. I see a lot of my younger friends in their twenties with shorts so big and so long I cannot even see their ankle. Now, that is not hate. It looks good on them. But I look like I am trying to stay young and hip when I do it. I would rather look in style, my version of it.

So I decided to make a short that is slightly oversized, at what I feel is a good length that can be worn as is or cut shorter. I was sure I would cut mine shorter immediately, but funny enough, I ended up wearing them long. I found that if I pick the right shirt, shoes and socks, the outfit is a winner.
I have sold these shorts and cut them for some guys and left them long for others. It is such a preference thing, based on your body type and how you like to wear your shorts.

I could write a whole article on picking the correct fit and size tee shirt. We will save that one for another week. I can, however, advise on the fit and size tee that I have found works best with longer shorts.
A slightly oversized shirt, or a boxy shirt with a cropped body, works great with today's men's fashion and longer denim shorts. If you are cutting your shorts a touch shorter, so they hit the top of your knee or slightly above, then you can use that same cropped tee or any of your normal fitting tees at that point.

That is the fun of adding a new style into your wardrobe. You get to get frustrated trying on all your shoes and tees, seeing what does not work, and then you find what does and you are off to the races. Summer is a great time to experiment with new ways to look good and stay somewhat cool.
There is no single right answer to how long your denim shorts should be. There is only the length that works on your body, with your shoes, with your tee. We built ours long on purpose so the choice stays yours. Wear them as they come, or take an inch off and never look back.
